The Rock: 'The Smashing Machine' Was An Opportunity To Challenge Myself In Ways I Haven't Been Challenged Before

The Rock is ready to challenge himself.

In 2025, A24 is expected to release a new film from Benny Safdie, 'The Smashing Machine'. The movie will center on the life of former MMA star Mark Kerr and will notably be headed by The Rock, who will play the titular character of Kerr.

This will be Rock's first time starring a movie for A24, a smaller studio compared to Hollywood giants like Disney, Paramount, Warner Bros, and Sony. Many fans are excited to see how well 'The Final Boss' will do in the film given that it will likely be focused on dramatic acting, something that the majority of his filmography has shied away from.

While chatting with GQ for a new interview, Rock talked about taking on 'The Smashing Machine' and said that he wanted to challenge himself in ways that he hasn't been challenged before.

“It was also an opportunity for me, I realized, to stretch myself in ways that I hadn’t been stretched yet. And also challenge myself in ways that I hadn’t been challenged.”

Later on in the interview, Rock was optimistic about his future, saying that there is a place in his career where he can sink his teeth into deeper and richer material.

“A hundred percent. Now not to say that ‘Oh, there’s no more big movies.’ Because the big movies are fun and there’s a place for them in our business for a lot of families and people around the world to enjoy them. But there’s also a place for me, in my career, where the material is deeper, it allows me to sink my teeth into something deeper, richer.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Rock addressed a report about his behavior on the set of 'Red One'. Learn more by clicking here.

Along with The Rock, 'Red One' also stars the likes of Chris Evans, JK Simmons, and Nick Kroll. The film is set to hit theaters on Friday, November 15.
