Ronda Rousey Viewed Writing Her Graphic Novel As A Reprieve From The 'Needless' Stress Of Last WWE Run

Ronda Rousey discusses how the stress of her most recent run in WWE led to her crafting her graphic novel, "Expecting The Unexpected."

Ronda Rousey was a groundbreaking UFC competitor who also spent time in WWE, helping its women's division break barriers. Rousey was one of the first three women, alongside Becky Lynch and Charlotte Flair, to headline WrestleMania in 2019. However, Rousey does not have fond memories of her second run in WWE, which began at the 2022 WWE Royal Rumble and concluded with her match against Shayna Baszler at WWE SummerSlam 2023.

During a conversation with Bill Pritchard of WrestleZone, Rousey again aired her grievances during her final run in WWE and spoke about how working on her graphic novel was a reprieve from the stressful world of WWE production.

“Yeah, I feel like it’s a good thing. I guess it means that I’m missed if people still to this day ask me if I’m going to be fighting or going to be wrestling. My last run, just with Vince [McMahon], Bruce Prichard, and John Laurinaitis, it just was such a negative experience,” Rousey explained. “Most of them are gone. Bruce’s little sh*t ass is still around. But I’m not overly excited to come back like I was the last time.

“Even though I had so many matches that I very much enjoyed and had a great time when I look back on it, I don’t really think of the joy that I had in those matches and those live shows, or that I had so much fun,” she continued. “I just think of the anxiety of never knowing what was going on until the very last minute, not being allowed to prepare, and getting our time cut over and over and over again. The experience itself was so needlessly stressful. I think that’s what drove me so hard towards screenwriting and graphic novels. This story is kind of like a refuge from that. I know that things are a lot different now. I’ve heard from the girls that it’s so much better, but it’s kind of hard to shake that and be excited to come back like I was before.”

Ronda Rousey won't be stepping back into the squared circle anytime soon. She recently announced that she's pregnant with her second child. Learn more here.
