Sami Callihan says independent wresting can provide a "true alternative"
In 2015, Sami Callihan left the WWE developmental program to return to the independent wrestling circuit. In an interview with TV Insider, Callihan said his leaving WWE communicated to fans what he wanted out of his career in professional wrestling.
"I think me leaving WWE and getting that persona of that, 'Yo, this dude quit WWE because he wasn't complacent and wanted to just sit around. He wanted to be the top guy.' I think that is when I think it really clicked, and l looked at wrestling from a whole different aspect,'" said Callhian
Promotions from across the country and world have been booking Callihan since he left WWE and he has made his way onto both Lucha Underground and Impact Wrestling. He went on to say if the rest of independent wrestling took the lead of Impact Wrestling and Lucha Underground, then the business as a whole could benefit.
"I’ve said for years that if it’s not WWE, everyone else should be working together because there is never going to be that one company like WWE. They’ve monopolized wrestling to the point where there is never really going to be direct one-on-one competition. There is never going to be another ‘Monday Night War.’ But there can be a true alternative. Now Impact Wrestling and Lucha Underground are the first wrestling companies on television that have been like, 'We are going to work together and make a run at this thing,'" said Callihan.
Sunday will be the latest pay-per-view from Impact Wrestling called Redemption. Callihan will be competing in a six-man House of Hardcore match. Fightful Wrestling will have live coverage and a recapping podcast for the event.
Lucha Underground just wrapped up filming for Season 4.
