Sami Zayn talks about his prior tenure as WWE Intercontinental Champion.
While Sami Zayn is attempting to defeat Gunther at WrestleMania XL, thus making history by ending the longest WWE Intercontinental Championship run in history, it will not be his first time holding gold.
Zayn has already been WWE Intercontinental Champion on three separate occasions, holding the title for a recognized combined time of 167 days.
Speaking on The Habs Lunch, Sami Zayn addressed how important it would be for him to return to Montreal as WWE Intercontinental Champion, considering he lost the title to Ricochet days away from a Montreal show in 2020.
"It’s funny you reference that match with Ricochet because I was the Intercontinental Champion at the time, and I lost the title six days before the Laval show," he said. "It always kind of bothered me, ‘I was so close to bringing home a championship to Montreal.’ If you’re a historian or nerd about this kind of stuff, there hasn’t been a Quebec champion in Montreal in almost 20 years. When La Resistance won the Tag Team Titles at a show at Bell Centre in 2005, I want to say. Since then, we haven’t had a Montreal (native) or Quebecer stand in the ring at the Belle Centre as a champion. It’s been almost 20 years. I was really looking forward to possibly doing that, but sadly, Johnny Knoxville goes in my business and costs me the IC Title right before the show in Laval. This is a weird full-circle moment to right that wrong and hopefully bring that championship back to Montreal."
Sami Zayn recently addressed the online reaction to his defeating Chad Gable in the Gauntlet Match to earn the opportunity at this year's WrestleMania. Fans can read his comments here.
