New Japan Pro-Wrestling is celebrating its 50th Anniversary in 2022 and Shinsuke Nakamura wishes he could be part of it.
Nakamura is a former five-time IWGP Intercontinental Champion and two-time IWGP Heavyweight Champion and has headlined multiple Wrestle Kingdom main events.
Speaking to Tokyo Sports, Nakamura stated he'd like to be part of the festivities, but knows that COVID protocols and travel restrictions would make things difficult.
"I haven't been to Japan at all because I haven't performed in Japan. In 2021, the UK tour was revived and I was able to go abroad, but the number of documents related to it increased, and of course I did inspections every day. I am very grateful that I was able to work among them. I want to wrestle in front of the fans who are waiting in Japan soon," said Nakamura while also noting the isolation period that comes with traveling.
"Through the company, I really wish I could cooperate," he said regarding NJPW's 50th Anniversary. "The game is ... difficult, isn't it? However, if you negotiate seriously ... It may be somehow, but now it's the situation like isolation and border measures. The risk is still high. It would be nice if the situation was calm and there was a TV program that would call me outside the match (laughs)."
NJPW is set to hold its two-night 50th Anniversary event on March 1 and 2. You can find more details regarding the 50th Anniversary festivities by clicking here.
Nakamura is currently signed to WWE where he is the reigning Intercontinental Champion. Sami Zayn is the current top contender for the title.
