Wednesday night during NXT's television tapings, Velveteen Dream defeated Johnny Gargano to win the NXT North American Title.

The bout was set-up early in the night when Gargano came out declared that Johnny Wrestling was back following NXT TakeOver: Phoenix. Tommaso Ciampa came out to celebrate with Gargano, but Gargano was having none of it.

Enter Velveteen Dream.

Dream reminded both men that, as a result of winning the Worlds Collide tournament over the weekend, he was owed an NXT Title shot of his choice. Instead of aiming for Ciampa and the NXT Title, he set his sights on Gargano and the North American Title. The two men would meet much later in the main event of the tapings, where Dream picked up the victory to become the new champion. After the bout, Gargano attacked Dream and stole the belt back.

There are reports that Gargano's post-match attack, which included Gargano locking Dream in the Gargano Escape and Dream tapping out before taking the belt and posing with Ciampa, could be seen as NXT filming a second ending.
