Tony Khan says All About Eve and Sunset Boulevard changed the course of AEW.
"Timeless" Toni Storm has drawn plenty of praise for her character work. The reigning AEW Women's World Champion has been involved in a complex on-screen relationship with Mariah May, and their bond has been complicated by Mina Shirakawa's crossover into AEW.
Speaking with Scott Fishman of TV Insider, Tony Khan was asked to name some movies and television shows he has drawn inspiration from for storylines and characters. He highlighted how "All About Eve" and "Sunset Boulevard" changed the course of AEW, as he borrowed from them for "Timeless" Toni Storm.
"All About Eve and Sunset Boulevard changed the course of AEW. Those are two of my favorites. If you’ve seen them, you know what I’m talking about. With “Timeless” Toni Storm, I took a lot of influence from those when I wanted to make her a character and lead off with her. We have a great tie-in with Turner Classic Movies. One influence came at the start of the lockdown. There were a few days before we had to do our show during the lockdown, which I think was March 18, 2020. I had a lot of time to watch other shows and what others did during these situations," Khan said.
Khan went on to note that he also drew inspiration from Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Fallon when they did late-night shows using Zoom during the pandemic.
During the interview, Tony Khan was asked about Ricochet. Check out his comments here.
Toni Storm is set to defend the AEW Women's World Championship against Mina Shirakawa at AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door.
Fightful will have coverage of AEW Dynamite as it airs on June 12, as well as a post-show podcast on our YouTube channel.
