Brian Pillman Jr. says that his recent title match against Brian Cage on AEW Dark was not supposed to happen.
Brian Pillman Jr. recently took a chance on himself by taking a booking with All Elite Wrestling. In his singles debut, he wrestled Shawn Spears on AEW Dark but the following week, he challenged Brian Cage for the newly awarded FTW Championship.
Speaking to Alex McCarthy of talkSPORT, Pillman revealed that the match with Cage was actually not supposed to take place but says that AEW rewarded him for his initial performance.
“That was the biggest thing for me. The Brian Cage match was never really supposed to happen, that was, more or less, I’d like to say a reward for doing so well in the first match. They realized I was a good guy to go out there, to sell and continue telling that story for Brian Cage and building him up for the monster that he is,” said Pillman. “I give a lot of credit to Shawn Spears for being such a genius in the ring and such a mastermind that a lot of people don’t give him the credit for.
“He made me look so good that the office in Cody [Rhodes] and Tony [Khan] were so impressed that they gave me the opportunity against Brian Cage. I’d like to think I knocked that one out of the park too, so we’ll see what the future holds for me.”
