The 2023 CMLL Universal Champion has been crowned.
On the 4/28/2023 edition of CMLL's "Viernes Espectacular", CMLL hosted the final match of their annual tourney to crown the Universal Champion, which is a tournament consisting of all of CMLL's champions competing in a four-round tournament, and the champion has now been decided.
In a Triple-Threat Match, CMLL World Middleweight Champion Dragon Rojo Jr faced the CMLL Mexican Middleweight Champion Templario & NWA World Historic Light Heavyweight Champion Atlantis Jr in a match to crown the 2023 Universal Champion, a title that was one in 2022 by Mistico and was previously held by New Japan Pro-Wrestling's Hiroshi Tanahashi & La Sombra (AEW's Andrade El Idolo).
Templario eliminated Atlantis Jr with an Avalanche Liger Bomb with a pin, leaving the title to be decided between the two long-standing foes Dragon Rojo Jr & Templario. In the end, Dragon Rojo Jr locked in the Octopus Hold on Templario to win the title and become the 2023 holder of the belt, and the 11th title holder ever. This is the first time he wins the title, despite previously competing in the tournament. It has yet to be revealed if the title will be defended, unlike previous years.
