Gunther is honored to be the king.
WWE brought back the King of the Ring tournament in 2024, and the finals were held at WWE King and Queen of the Ring. Gunther beat Randy Orton in the finals to win the tournament. Gunther's ascension rose at WWE SummerSlam, as he beat Damian Priest to win the World Heavyweight Championship.
Speaking with Fightful's Sean Ross Sapp at a media event of WWE SummerSlam, Gunther was asked whether winning the King of the Ring had been a goal when he was younger.
"I wouldn’t say it was a lifetime goal when I was a kid or something, but I’ve always loved tournaments in professional wrestling and that has a very long history, up and down I would say. In the fashion it got brought back, it meant a lot. Very honored to be the first winner in the new version of the King of the Ring," Gunther said.
