The New Mountie? Well, Kevin Owens doesn't remember it.
Owens got his start in wrestling working with "The Mountie," Jacques Rougeau. Since then, the two aren't on good terms with one another, something Owens has spoken about openly in the past. In a recent interview with Chris Van Vliet, Nick Dinsmore claims that he ribbed Owens when the latter came into WWE.
"Kevin Owens is sitting ringside, just watching the class. I sit down next to him. He said the first time he ever wrestled was for Jacques Rougeau. He kinda acted like somebody else really helped train him, but for some reason, the first show was Jacques Rougeau. A couple of days go by. I come back and said, 'They got a new character for you. They're going to bring you in as the new Mountie.' He was starting to cry. 'You can't let them do that.' I said, 'No, it's going to be great! It's going to be awesome! You're going to have the red thing. They might even bring Jacques in. It's going to be great!'. He was beginning to panic. Needless to say, it didn't happen."
Owens quickly responded on Twitter, confused about the situation. When speaking with Fightful, Owens clarified the rumor and says he reached out to Dinsmore about it.
"I talked to him about it after. At first, when it was reported, I was like, 'What? This never happened.' He and I talked and he was saying -- I don't remember this -- he claims he ribbed me because after he talked to me about who trained me, which turned out to be The Mountie, it was clear from what I was telling him that The Mountie and I were not on good terms. He thought it would be funny to make me think that WWE creative wanted me to be the new Mountie. He yanked my chain and told me that was the plan and I have no trouble believing that if I did buy what he was saying, I probably did, I definitely didn't cry because I'm a grown man, but I definitely did not like it. There is no doubt about that part, but I don't remember any of it. The way it was reported, it seemed like he was saying it was an actual plan by creative, which I was like, 'that's not true.' After he explained it, he said, 'No, remember, I joked with you.' I didn't remember that. A lot of people were either glad it didn't happen or upset it didn't happen," said Owens.
No New Mountie, no New Quebecers. It would appear that Kevin Owens ended up doing fine for himself, winning the WWE Universal Championship, in addition to a plethora of other titles.
You can see Kevin Owens in action this Sunday at WWE TLC when he takes on Roman Reigns for the WWE Universal Championship. He's the subject of the latest episode of WWE Chronicle, both of which can be seen on the WWE Network.
