Sammy D: I Think It's A Great Time To Be A Young Wrestler In Ireland, Everyone's Hungry

Sammy D puts over the Irish wrestling scene and the young talent breaking throught.

Sammy is the current OTT World Champion, a title he has held for close to a year now. Throughout his reign, he has defended against top imports as well as some of the best homegrown Irish talent on the island. Recently, Sammy has began to campaign for more title defenses against homegrown talent.

While speaking to Fightful's Corey Brennan in a recent interview, Sammy was asked to name what talent to keep an eye on in the Irish scene, with Sammy naming several young stars making breaking through in OTT.

"There's a couple of guys there that stand out to me. Obviously Jay, I think he's gonna have a standout year in 2024, but then you've other guys coming in that are really coming into their own. The likes of Liamo,he's getting better and better every time he steps in the ring and he's getting more popular with the fans and he seems to be getting more momentum behind him and he's fun to watch. I'm looking forward to to seeing what he can do this year. Other than that, I think you know we have Matthew 'Bullet' Smyth who has just won the tag team championships with with Sean Guinness. I mean them as a tag team. I think I've watched their last couple of matches and they could go in the ring with any tag team across the world and knock it out of the park. I mean, I think they just look crisp. I think they've really come into their own the last few months as a tag team. They look like a natural pairing. I think they have a big year ahead of them. Matthew, a bit of a younger guy. Obviously, Sean's been around for a very long time and a phenomenal talent. Sometimes overlooked, but I can tell you he probably is the most crisp wrestler in this country and has been for a very long time. But I think with with the tutelage that Maxer can give Matthew going forward. I think that tag team can be anywhere in the world. But you've got guys coming up there. You've got Big Boots. I think he has an amazing look about him. He's a fantastic big guy and works really well. Then you've got other guys, Keane Noonan coming in. There's a list that goes on and on of guys who really are coming through and there's guys that have been around for a long time. Maybe you're just finding their niche, finding their spot on the card. You got the likes of BDE. Josh, I know, is only new to the Irish scene, but Fabulous Nicky has been around for a long time. But sometimes it takes a long time for it to click and for something to click with the audience or with yourself.I think BDE look like they're very, very entertaining. Maybe it's just their time to rise. So there's a lot of great talent. There's a lot of excitement around the locker room."

Sammy continued, noting that everyone's hungry and that he believes it's a great time to be a young wrestler in Ireland.

"Everyone's hungry. I think now more than ever, it's come to the point where there's spots opening up and there's rotation happening in OTT. It's a great time for a young wrestler in Ireland, I think."

Sammy is currently scheduled to defend his OTT World Title against Trent Seven at Gaff Party Night One in Wolverhamption, while he will defend against fellow Draw member Jay on Night Two in Dublin. You can read more here.
