Tom Lawlor is still interested in the world of MMA.
Over the past few years, Lawlor has kept his focus on the world of wrestling, primarily competing in MLW and New Japan Pro Wrestling. Lawlor's efforts have been rather successful, as he's notched reigns with the MLW World Heavyweight Championship, the NJPW STRONG Openweight Championship, and the MLW World Tag Team Championships.
In a recent interview with Fightful Overbooked, Lawlor was asked about the potential of returning to the world of MMA.
"I’d be interested in competing again. I don’t know exactly under what kind of ruleset. Every time I drink a few beers and watch BKFC, I think, ‘Hey, it doesn’t seem like it would be that bad.’ The idea that they’re doing a $25 million tournament sounds cool. There is DogFight in Spain, but they have insane stuff like 3 on 1 fights, tag team fights. Bizarre anything goes fights where you can strike to the groin. MMA in the US is so homogenous. It’s the same product over and over. It’s all in the cage. Everything is very similar. If you look at MMA overseas, Japan, Europe, all these other places doing different things, that’s what appeals to me. We’ve been watching MMA for 30 years and I think people have kind of figured out the game. We’ve seen almost all of the techniques that you can do. I like seeing different rulesets. I like seeing dirty boxing. All these things have a place. I’d be into doing something else, but I don’t know if it would be a MMA fight."
Lawlor went on to shut down the idea of doing SlapFight.
"I don’t think so. I’m like the originator almost of that, punching Dave Kaplan in the bathroom in 2008. It’s very similar. You’d think I might have some experience and be good at it. I do it in the pro wrestling ring. I sit there and take 50 slaps form Minoru Suzuki. How much harder can these guys be hitting than him?"
Elsewhere in the interview, Lawlor commented on Jacob Fatu's success in WWE. Check out his full comments by clicking here.
MLW Superfight 6 will take place in Atlanta, Georgia on Saturday, February 6. The show will stream live on YouTube at 9 p.m. EST.
