Flip Gordon: I Haven't Had Talks With AEW/ROH, I Don't Want To Be Confined To A Contract Right Now

Flip Gordon is happily doing his own thing.

Gordon had a lengthy run in Ring of Honor, and he was named the company's Breakout Star of the Year in 2018. When AEW launched in 2018, many fans expected Gordon to leave the company and follow The Elite (Cody Rhodes, The Young Bucks, Hangman Page, and Kenny Omega), as he was a regular on BTE until the end of 2018. At the time, he was signed to ROH, and he later signed a multi-year extension in the spring of 2020. ROH went on hiatus at the end of 2021, and AEW CEO Tony Khan acquired the company.

Speaking with Piers Austin, Gordon was asked whether he has had any talks with ROH or AEW since then. Gordon stated that he has not had any conversations, but he hasn't reached out either. He also noted that he has "zero interest" in wrestling for TV right now, as he is still experimenting and figuring out who he wants to be as a wrestler.

“No, I haven’t had any conversations since I got released from Ring of Honor with AEW. But I haven’t asked either. I haven’t reached out to anybody to ask. I feel like if they think I’m good enough, they should reach out to me. Maybe that’s wrong for thinking that, but every other time in my career, the company’s reaching out to me. So I’m just doing what I’m doing. Honestly, I have zero interest in wrestling for TV right now. I’m still experimenting and trying new things and trying to figure out who I am as a wrestler, who I want to be as a wrestler, and I’m having a hell of a time doing it. I’m having so much fun," Gordon said.

When asked whether he would want to sign with a national company, Gordon responded by saying that he's not seeking a deal at the moment, but he would be open to it in the future. He made it clear that he has plenty of goals, and some of them wouldn't be possible if he was locked into a contract. Gordon stated that he'd like to come in on a handshake deal and tell some stories, but he doesn't want to land somewhere and get lost in the shuffle.

"Not right now, but in the future, absolutely. Right now, I have a lot of goals that I want to do and some of those goals, I can’t do if I’m confined to a contract. Would I love to come in and tell a story, do a handshake deal for three-to-six months or however long the story is, absolutely. I’m 100% for that because I want to tell great stories and have great matches. But do I want to sign a two-or-three year deal, come in and then be off TV or not have many ideas? It’s like no, if I’m coming in, I want to have an idea. Have something for me. Because if not, I’m just gonna do my own thing on the independents, make my own schedule. I don’t want to just be flown in just to sit and chill and see other people doing what I want to do. I’d rather be out wrestling," he said.

Gordon later emphasized that he is in no rush to sign somewhere. He highlighted that he didn't have to follow the route of going to WWE and potentially getting released. Instead, Gordon made it clear that he's happily doing his own thing, and he would take a "great deal," but he's loving what he's doing otherwise.

“I’m in no rush. I don’t have to go that route, straight to developmental and then maybe get released, and go through depression. I’m like, no, I’ll just do it my own way, have fun, wrestle, and get as good as I can get. If I get a great offer, I’ll take it. If not, no big deal. I’m having fun doing what I’m loving doing," Gordon said.

Gordon was backstage at AEW Dynamite tapings in 2022, and he appeared on an episode of Being The Elite, but Fightful Select reported that he had not signed with the company.

In a previous interview, Gordon reflected on leaning into his conspiracy theorist gimmick in ROH. Click here to see what he had to say.
