An Interim AEW World Champion was crowned at AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door.
On June 3, CM Punk announced that he had a broken foot and would be out of action for the foreseeable future. This news came less than a week after Punk won the AEW World Title from Hangman Adam Page at AEW Double or Nothing. As a result, an Interim Champion was to be decided at AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door.
In the main event of Forbidden Door, Jon Moxley faced off against Hiroshi Tanahashi for the title. After a hard-fought battle, it was Moxley who would emerge victorious after hitting the Death Rider on Tanahashi. The two men would shake hands after the bell.
