Johnny also discusses the fan-base that NXT has.
Johnny Gargano is not in the best of mindsets storyline wise as he inadvertently handed over the NXT Championship to his bitter rival Tommaso Ciampa this past Wednesday on NXT TV. Ciampa challenged Aleister Black for the NXT Championship and towards the end of the match when the referee was down on the outside, Gargano ran into the ring in an attempt to stop Ciampa from winning the NXT Title but instead Gargano accidently hit Aleister Black with the belt which led to Tommaso becoming the top dog in NXT.
Ahead of this weekend's NXT live event in Arizona, Johnny Gargano spoke with 'AZcentral' and shared the story of how he met one of the bright spots in his life despite the madness, his wife and former PWG World Tag Team Champion Candice LeRae.
“I remember she brought her cousin to the back, and they were just hanging out talking, and I decided I was going to try to get to her by talking to her cousin about her cellphone,” Gargano said. “It didn’t really work that well, but we developed a friendship.”
Gargano having being dubbed the "heart and soul" of NXT relates to the hardcore fan-base that NXT brings in. Gargano stated that some of the most nitty-gritty wrestling fans who follow the independent wrestling scene have transitioned over to NXT.
“Some of the most hardcore, nitty-gritty fans in the world are independent-wrestling fans, and I think a lot of those came with us to NXT,” he said.
