Apparently, Don Callis had Kenny Omega to thank for his new commentary job with New Japan Pro Wrestling.
The Wrestling Observer reported recently that Omega recommended Callis to be the new color commentator for the English-language broadcasts on its streaming service, NJPW World.
The Observer reported that Omega's recommendation basically was the reason Omega got the job and went on to speculate that NJPW following his wishes suggested that Omega would be remaining with the promotion on a long-term basis.
Since his loss to Kazuchika Okada in the main event of Wrestle Kingdom 11 earlier this month in the Tokyo Dome, the rumor mill has been running rampant that Omega might be leaving for WWE. After New Years Dash, Omega announced he was taking a break from Japan. In the meantime, John Cena has made Instagram posts that were interpreted as teasing an Omega debut, Triple H has commented on the prospect of Omega joining WWE, and even Jim Ross weighed in on Omega's potential future. The WWE went so far as to post a video on its YouTube channel on the topic of surprise Royal Rumble entrants that mentioned Omega. That video since has been changed to private by WWE.
Known as The Jackyl in WWE and Cyrus in ECW, Callis announced earlier this week that he would be replacing Steve Corino on the NJPW English broadcasts. Corino left to begin working in a behind-the-scenes capacity for WWE. Callis currently co-hosts his own wrestling podcast with former WWE, WCW, and ECW star Lance Storm.
