Matt Hardy comments on whether or not we will ever see the broken iteration of his character again.
Matt Hardy recently celebrated 30 years in the wrestling industry. That type of longevity in the industry is always attributed to two major factors, adaptation and reinvention. Matt Hardy has consistently shown a willingness to reinvent himself anytime he undergoes a character change but perhaps the reinvention that led to the greatest career resurgence for Matt Hardy is the "Broken" Matt Hardy character. Emerging in 2016, "Broken" Matt Hardy breathe new life into both Hardy Boys as Jeff Hardy became the nefarious Brother Nero.
In 2020, Matt Hardy tried to debut a new iteration of "Broken" Matt upon debuting in AEW. This version of "Broken" Matt was inhabited by the spiritual being, Damascus. Unfortunately, due to the emerging Global pandemic, there was no audience reception for the "Broken" Matt character and it was quickly done away with.
Speaking on the latest episode of his podcast, The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy, Hardy says that there's always a chance that fans will see the broken character again and says that his current situation with The Firm in AEW may lead to him being broken once more.
"I think there's a chance it's not out of the realm of possibility. It could definitely happen, we'll see. It's going to be really interesting to see how this scenario, with myself in The Firm, ends up playing out. Let it play out. Who knows this might lead to me being broken."
Furthermore, Matt Hardy once again stressed the importance of reinvention.
"I mean, you always gotta evolve. You always gotta freshen up. I mean, you just can't give — you can't do reruns. Much like how professional wrestling is 52 weeks a year, new, first-content. We don't do reruns in wrestling, you always have to move the story forward. You always have to evolve and the same thing goes when you revisit a different character."
Matt Hardy was hoping that 2022 would be the year that The Hardy Boyz would cement their legacy as the greatest tag team in all of space and time but unfortunately, the need for the family to shift focus onto Jeff Hardy's health and well-being has put those plans on hold. Learn more here.
For now, Matt Hardy is stuck in the firm and Stokely Hathaway says that he will not let Matt nor Private Party out of their contracts until the release of Avatar 8. Matt is trying to combat Stokely baffling him with his love of the culture and his rap skills.
