Roman Reigns must even be acknowledged for allowing Mattel to be able to sell niche action figures for characters such as “The Goon”
Roman Reigns is undoubtedly the top full-time superstar in WWE today. Over on the Monday Night Raw brand, Drew McIntyre has taken the top spot for the last year-and-a-half.
As such, these are the superstars that are at the forefront of marketing and merchandising currently for WWE. Whether it is t-shirt variants or action figure variants, Names like Roman Reigns are always going to have more variety than lesser-known names throughout history.
Recently, during San Diego Comic-Con@Home, Mattel unveiled new action figures for names that more die-hard wrestling fans would know and would be excited to see and I line up such as The Goon, a hockey gimmick portrayed by Bill Irwin in 1996, and Zodiac, Brutus Beefcake’s Dungeon of Doom persona in WCW.
Discussing this and the reason behind it on the Adventures in Toy Collecting podcast, Mattel representative Steve Ozer explained that it is because names like Roman Reigns move so much merchandise that they are able to branch out into the more obscure characters like Zodiac and The Goon.
“We do get questions a lot, 'Why another Roman or why another Drew, right?’ Ozer began. “I mean, those guys always sell and sell a lot of units and those guys make it possible to make The Goon or the Zodiac, or, you know, all of these tertiary characters who we all want in our collections, but I mean, we're not going to move like, you know, tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of units of them. Right. Um, so, you know, I think, you know, I do wish that the line of thinking of like, oh, great, why don't we get another so-and-so? I mean, it's a blessing that [Roman and Drew] sell well, and we can include them because that just means we can keep it going with, you know, all these other characters to build up our collections.”
