Austin Aries is now a double champion in Impact Wrestling.
He defeated Matt Sydal at tonight's Impact tapings to win the championship for the first time. It was billed as a title for title match.
Sydal had been champion since beating EC3 for the championship back on November 10, holding it for 64 days. In a weird move, during one of the tapings Sydal brought in Josh Matthews as his spirit guide and had given him the championship.
The future of the title remains unclear. This was fought under normal rules, as was a match during one of the tapings for the championship as well. Don Callis mentioned on Twitter that the belt was done after someone complained to him on Twitter about putting the title on Matthews:
