Oba Femi's first address as the NXT Champion did not go according to plan.
Oba Femi kicked off the January 14 episode of WWE NXT, but he was interrupted by Tony D'Angelo, the only man to defeat him in WWE NXT so far. D'Angelo said that when he decides to go after Oba again, he will walk out with both the NXT North American Title and the NXT Championship.
Oba advised Tony to focus more on Ridge Holland, and right on cue, Holland appeared. Tony left the ring to brawl with him. Then, Oba was attacked by behind Eddy Thorpe with a leather strap. Thorpe then posed with the NXT Championship.

Eddy Thorpe was supposed to be in the NXT Title match at NXT New Year's Evil, but he claimed to have been attacked backstage. Earlier in his promo on January 14, Femi compared Thorpe to the gum under his shoe.
