Report: Rey Mysterio Pulled From WWE SmackDown World Cup Tournament On FOX Due To Injury

Rey Mysterio is reportedly sidelined with an injury.

Rey Mysterio was supposed to compete in the WWE SmackDown World Cup on FOX to potentially earn another opportunity at GUNTHER's WWE Intercontinental Championship. However, Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter has backed up a Ringside News report that Rey Mysterio has been sidelined due to an injury. According to Dave Meltzer, the injury is either an ankle injury or another kind of foot injury.

As a result, Mysterio has been replaced in the tournament by Mustafa Ali. Ali will face Ricochet on Friday, November 18 in the tournament. Sean Ross Sapp, on Fightful Select, reports that Mustafa Ali's placement in the tournament does not indicate a permanent move to the SmackDown roster.

Mustafa Ali was announced for the Smackdown World Cup, but not so fast on him becoming a full time roster member for now.

Mustafa Ali, who is featured on Raw in a United States Title program with Seth Rollins, was revealed as a Smackdown World Cup participant. Shinsuke Nakamura, Ricochet, Butch, Jinder Mahal, Sami Zayn, Santos Escobar, Braun Strowman -- all Smackdown stars -- were also announced. This led many to think that Mustafa Ali had been moved over to the brand.

We're told by WWE sources that at this moment, Mustafa Ali is still a member of the Raw roster, and is supposed to work both Raw and Smackdown during the tourney. We weren't given a reason as to why Ali was brought in as opposed to using a Smackdown talent.

Rey Mysterio last wrestled at a WWE live event in Mexico City, Mexico on Sunday, October 30.

We will continue to follow this story and report any and all updates on the condition of Rey Mysterio.
