Rey Mysterio Explains Being Pitched The Custody Storyline With Eddie Guerrero

Rey Mysterio and his son Dominik remember the storyline where Rey and Eddie Guerrero would battle for the custody of Dominik.

On the "WWE Untold: Rey Mysterio" documentary, Rey spoke on how he was pitched the storyline, which resulted in a ladder match against Eddie at the 2005 edition of SummerSlam. Rey said Eddie came up with the storyline alongside Bruce Pritchard because Eddie wanted to be a heel and do something with Rey. When the storyline was pitched, Rey was excited to do it.

"Eddie at the time, he wanted to be the bad guy, el rudo. He knew exactly what he was doing. From my understanding, the story of the custody of Dominik was put together by Bruce Pritchard and Eddie Guerrero. When Eddie approached me with the story they laid out, you know, where Eddie had some issues before Dominik was born. He wasn't in the right state of mind to have Dominik. But [Eddie and Rey] have always been very close. So [Eddie] spoke to [Rey] and said, 'Rey, would you look out for Dominik like if he really was your kid.' I'm like, 'Oh, this sounds really good.' Now the hard part was convincing Dominik," Mystery said.

Dominik, at first, was reluctant to be a part of it, but once Rey told him money would get involved, he jumped at the opportunity to do it just so that he can get more toys. In addition, Dominik spoke about a vignette that had him and Eddie in a park and Dominik remembered how Eddie would check up on him after every take and make sure that he is all right.

"I remember the first person coming up to me was my dad. We had already gone out traveling with him. He asked me, he's like, 'Hey, you know, how would you feel about doing some stuff with us?' I didn't give it much thought. I was like, 'No, probably not.' I didn't like being in front of cameras and then he mentioned that there was going to be some money involved. As an eight-year-old kid, you think money equals toys. So I said sure why not? I remember very vividly the scene where I was filming with Eddie in the park. We did maybe like five or six takes and after every take, he'd ask me, 'Are you ok?' And he would hand me a Twizzlers," Dominik said.

Dominik also recalls being constantly asked who was his real father, something that he still deals with to this day.

"I believe I was in third grade at the time and I was being asked, 'So who really is your dad? Is it Eddie? Is it Rey?' And I'd be like, 'Well, it's Rey,'" Dominik said. "That was always the question every time I got back. Still to this day, people are like, 'So who really is your dad?'"

Rey ended up winning the match at SummerSlam in 2005 to "gain custody" of Dominik. If you use any of the quotes above, please credit Fightful for the transcription.
