Road Dogg Explains What He Does In WWE, Gives Insight Into Creative Process

Road Dogg jokes that he has no idea what he does at WWE and then discusses the creative process and his approach.

It was recently reported that Brian "Road Dogg" James would be one of the head writers of WWE Friday Night SmackDown. He has written for SmackDown in the past, is a producer in NXT, has helped young talents with promos, and has been a VP of Live Events.

While speaking to Chris Van Vliet on the Insight podcast, Road Dogg spoke about what he does at WWE. He noted that he's still in charge of Live Events, but since WWE has scaled back on Live Events, that role is not as important as it once was.

"I have no idea. I could care less, to tell you the truth [laughs]. No, so really, I’m still in charge of creative of live events, but we have scaled live events back domestically, especially this coming year," he said. "We’re going to find where our sweet spot is, but a lot of overseas live events coming up this year. There is huge money there. The business side of things right now are so far beyond what they have ever been before. Even Attitude (Era), all that stuff, is just put to shame what the business is doing now. With Hunter at the Helmsley [Laughs]. It’s such a different environment. Old regime had a problem with stifling creativity. Sometimes it was better to know that I knew an answer to, I’m not saying that I don’t know, because I still do, but there was a time when the void happened of ‘Oh, who do I answer to?’ There are negatives and positives about old and new regime. New regime is like Google. Like we have ping pong tables in the production meeting room. We don’t, really. It’s creative, he opens the floor, nobody gets shut down. It’s free range creativity and it’s incredible.

"I’ll help with rehearsals. We’ll go through the production meeting," he continued. "I’ll pipe up if I have to. He handles everything. He has the production meeting and it’s basically to tell you, ‘Here is what we’re going to do. Do you guys have any better ideas?’ Also, the producers will have sent in...I’ve been there 15 years now, on the other side of the fence, I’ve never seen a better time of producers. The upper echelon roll it downhill often to them because they are a good group of folks they know our industry and they are putting great matches together with our talent. I’ve never seen a better group of producers. We’ll get with them, feel them out, they’ll send in feedback if they think ‘this feels weird.’ Sometimes, Hunter will go, ‘That’s a much better idea than what we had,’ and change it there on the spot. It’s an open forum of ideas. I think that’s the way you end up with the best ones."
