Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson reflects on what he was thinking when Vince Russo defected from WWE to join WCW in 1999.
Vince Russo was a part of WWE during the pivotal years of The Rock's career, he was even the head writer during Rock's first runs with the WWE Championship. Russo would leave WWE in the latter half of 1999, jumping ship to WCW to take on the role of that promotion's head creative position.
During the third episode of VICE's "Who Killed WCW?" docuseries, The Rock recalled what his thoughts were when Vince Russo made that decision for his career. An old-school pro wrestler at heart, Rock says he was happy for Russo and understands that in professional wrestling, defections like these happen all the time.
"When Vince Russo made the jump to WCW to run that entire ship, I remember thinking, 'Good for him. Great.' This is the world of professional wrestling. This shit happens all the time," Rock recalled. "He made the decision what's best for him and his family, and he went after an opportunity to go down to WCW. You're handed the entire book, write the story."
In the past, Vince Russo has taken great exception to claims that he is responsible for the demise of World Championship Wrestling.
