Sami Callihan Thinks IMPACT's Last Rites Match Should Stay In The Past, But Would Do One If Asked

Sami Callihan is open to competing in a Last Rites Match but he's not about to start any campaigns to bring the match back.

Sami Callihan is open to competing in all types of matches. Most recently, he competed in a Barbed Wire Massacre with Moose and Steve Maclin. He continues to want to push the boundaries in IMPACT Wrestling and compete in all different kinds of matches.

When speaking with WrestleZone, the topic of a Last Rites Match came up. The Last Rites Match between Abyss and Sting at TNA Wrestling Destination X was a unique take on a traditional Casket Match in which after the opponent was placed inside the casket, it would be raised to the ceiling. In 2018, IMPACT Wrestling would do one more Last Rites Match with Allie and Su Yung but that match would be more in line with the traditional Casket Match.

Sami tells WrestleZone that he believes is a reason that match stayed in the past but he would do one if offered and rise to the occasion.

“I think that’s one better left alone. There might be a reason that there was only one of those [laugh]. When you really think about it, there might be a reason there’s only one. But hell, if the opportunity presented itself, I’d take a challenge. That’s where I want, I don’t want things to be easy. I don’t want things to be cookie-cutter. If you put me in any match, I’ll keep saying it until I’m blue in the face, I’m the most versatile wrestler on this planet today, and any match you put me in, I’m going to find a way to make it work.

“When you brought it up, I had that picture in my head. That casket being lowered down in the middle of the ring. I’m like, ‘Oh, I hope he doesn’t bring it up…’ But you brought it up. But good or bad, that is the point of IMPACT Wrestling history, right? Things like that is what makes IMPACT Wrestling great. They’re not afraid to experiment. They’re not afraid to go out of the norm and think outside the box and that's why I love this company in the way I do."

On October 7, IMPACT Wrestling is presenting its biggest show of the year, Bound For Glory. The night before, Sami Callihan will be the special guest referee in a match with moose and Steve Maclin. Learn more here.
