Larry D Discusses Obtaining His Release From IMPACT Wrestling And His Goals As A Free Agent

Larry D talks about obtaining his IMPACT Wrestling release.

Larry D was a staple member of the IMPACT Wrestling roster in recent years. Starting his journey with them in 2019, Larry was able to show his range during his years with IMPACT as the company itself was looking to re-establish its place in the industry.

Whether it was as a member of XXXL alongside Acey Romero or as Lawrence D, a man who committed attempted murder during the Wrestle House saga, Larry D was happy to be a part of the show in any capacity.

In recent weeks, he tweeted that he wanted to be released from his contract and would eventually be granted that release. Now, he is talking about it in a new interview with Sean Ross Sapp.

Larry says that he understands the nature of the business and that by asking for his release, he knows the ball is in his court.

“The thing is, IMPACT! Wrestling has grown so much. There’s so much talent that comes through there and you see the NXT crew, and you see AEW and NWA and everything. It’s easy to get lost in the mix,” Larry says. “Where we were at creatively, I feel, from the tag team party to fitting where I’m at and in the process, I’m just told to get in the best shape I can and be prepared. That’s what I do and I’m just waiting and I’m watching the growth of IMPACT! Wrestling and the competitor in me is like, ‘Man, I absolutely love everything about IMPACT! Wrestling.’ I can’t say, ‘Aw, man. Those son-of-a-guns ruined my wrestling career.’”

He continued, “Because I think for the first time ever, like, we hear on the indies a lot, ‘Oh, it’s just business.’ I think finally for the first time in twenty years, [I understand it.] It’s just business. Which also, in turn, is the same way with me. It’s just business. I want to see myself do better. I feel that for twenty years that I’ve busted and given everything that I have to get where I’m at. The competitor in me has to step up and say, ‘Hey, I know I can play on the field.’ I know by asking my release that puts the ball in my court to do what I need to do to go where I want to go.”

Looking forward to the future, Larry says he wants to travel and hit all of the major promotions currently active. He named every promotion from the Deathmatch independent promotion, Game Changer Wrestling, to traveling overseas to wrestle in New Japan.

He also says he has his sites on the National Wrestling Alliance and its current World Champion, Trevor Murdoch.

“Where I want to go is to continue to prove to the world, whether it be on airplanes across the world at New Japan Wrestling or whether it be for GCW or whether it be MLW. They talk about the door is open. Well, I’m ready to step through. NWA, I would love to line this fist up across that ring from, say, Trevor Murdoch. Imagine that match-up. I would love to get the opportunity to get in there at AEW and say, ‘Hey, I’m still one of the best heavyweights in the world.’”

Confident in his abilities, Larry says there are not many in the industry, regardless of promotion, that can outwork him.

“As far as outworking me, I feel that not many are gonna do it. I don’t have the best body. I’ll give you that. I may not be seven-foot tall. But what I do have is the best right hand in wrestling. I’m not trying to cut a promo on you, but that’s what got me here, is this right hand. Scott D’Amore himself said, ‘It doesn’t matter if you do this here and you walk away, you’re going back to work the next week and you’re gonna show up and kick ass again.’ Well, this is my work now. There is no welding. This is my work and this is what I want to do. This right hand, I want to drop whether it be IMPACT! Wrestling, WWE even or AEW, or anybody that puts me on the field. I’ve always been a competitor. I always bet on myself. That’s simply all it was. There’s no hard feelings there. I want to be a part of IMPACT Wrestling!, I just want to come to work. That was it.”

Larry's partner in XXXL, Acey Romero, was also recently granted his release from IMPACT. In speaking about his release, Romero, who also said that there were no hard feelings between himself and IMPACT, says he felt “dicked around” by the creative direction for the team and their lack of being utilized.

Larry D explains he would also try to catch a lot for himself it just wanted to come to work and prove what he could do.

“I would say to them is, besides I want to come to work, is the fact that when I do come to work, you’re gonna get the very best me any time. You’re always going to have that positive, I’m here, ready, I’m the first there, last to leave. That’s just my father in me. You’re gonna get one of the best heavyweights, if not the best heavyweight going today that’s unsigned. I’m wanna say that right now. I think you can put me versus Keith Lee and you’re gonna sell out any venue. I think you put me versus Trevor Murdoch, sell out any venue. Alex Hammerstone, I’d love to have that match, wouldn’t you? How about myself versus Jacob Fatu? I think that would be great. I think IMPACT! Wrestling, let’s open that door back up. I said it earlier. How about Moose? How about Josh Alexander? How about Richie Swann? Anybody. I just want to come to work. I want to put forth my best right hand and just prove that I’m still one of the best in the world.”

Now, Larry will have the opportunity to do everything he wants to do as a free agent with the ball in his court. You can follow Larry on Twitter @legendoflarryd
