Anderson was the reigning NEVER Openweight Champion when he returned to WWE alongside Luke Gallows in October. Though a scheduling conflict caused him to miss the November 5 NJPW event, he returned to NJPW in December to successfully defend the NEVER Openweight Title against Hikuleo before losing the title to Tama at Wrestle Kingdom 17.
