Kevin Nash comments on the Montreal Screwjob.
The Montreal Screwjob remains one of the biggest controversies in WWE history. At Survivor Series 1997, Vince McMahon called for the bell when Shawn Michaels had Bret Hart in the Sharpshooter. Referee Earl Hebner followed McMahon's orders, though Hart had not tapped out, so Michaels won the WWF Championship. Over the years, fans have often argued whether the Montreal Screwjob was a work, though Bret Hart has often discussed the incident and voiced his frustrations.
Speaking on his Kliq This podcast, the Montreal Screwjob came up in the conversation, and WWE Hall of Famer Kevin Nash responded to a fan who asked him why he didn't just ask Michaels if the Montreal Screwjob was a work. Co-host Sean Oliver noted that Sean Waltman previously hesitated when he asked him whether it was a work.
“I don’t think any of us are 100% sure that it wasn't...that it’s not a work," Nash said.
Another fan said that Vince McMahon could have booked a match between Bret Hart and The Undertaker so that Bret wouldn’t have to face Shawn. Nash responded by noting that this would have been booking around Hart, rather than intentionally booking The Undertaker to win.
"Yeah, but you have to realize, that’s booking to get around Bret, not booking ‘Taker…if you’re sitting in a creative conversation with one other person, and you look in the locker room and say, ‘Which person, especially their gimmick, does not need nor really fit with the world title?’ ‘Taker. He’s the dead guy. ‘Taker’s just ‘Taker, man," Nash said.
