Saraya (Paige in WWE) was officially released by WWE on July 7, 2022 after she announced that WWE would not be renewing her contract in June.
Saraya would end up signing with AEW, making a surprise appearance at AEW Dynamite Grand Slam. Before she joined AEW, she did get an offer from Triple H, who took over creative duties in WWE on July 22 following Vince McMahon's retirement, to return to the company.
"Man, I do love Hunter, he’s so fantastic. He was like, 'Wait what happened?!' I was like, 'I dunno, they haven’t renewed my contract.' He was like, 'Oh my gosh! Well I didn’t know that, so I’m sorry!' He was really fantastic. He did give me the opportunity to potentially be a GM again, and give me the opportunity to be like, 'If you ever potentially want to wrestle again, I’ll give you that opportunity too.' He was very open about any ideas that I had," Saraya recalled to Alistair McGeorge of Metro.
In October 2022, Fightful Select reported that Saraya was offered the General Manager role by Triple H.
Ultimately, Saraya signed with AEW as she wanted to pursue other projects and was worried about not being utilized again.
Saraya will team with Toni Storm on Wednesday's AEW Dynamite to face Britt Baker & Jamie Hayter. It will mark Saraya's second match since she was forced to retire due to neck injuries in December 2017. She made her in-ring return at AEW Full Gear, defeating Baker in singles competition.
